Make Data Center Connectivity Your Competitive Advantage

World record clustered database performance at a fraction of the cost

In November 2006, Oracle 10g RAC achieved world record TPC-H performance using InfiniBand-based clustering.

  • 62% better performance on a key supply chain industry metric (Stock Keep Units - SKU)
  • 35% cost reduction of solution when compared to clustering using gigabit Ethernet.

Use of InfiniBand-based unified I/O for networking, messaging and storage reduces cabling and management complexities. Efficient clustering and SAN access using InfiniBand enables fewer CPU cores and I/O adapters to achieve the same performance levels (such as block service rates) than when gigabit Ethernet based clustering and Fibre Channel based SAN access are used. This results in significant dollar and power consumption savings and allows data centers to grow their data warehousing capabilities in an incremental way using commodity servers.

Cost effective server virtualization using I/O unification and flexible capacity scaling
Growth of multi-core CPU-based servers and use of multiple virtual machines is driving the need for more I/O connectivity per physical server. Typical VMware ESX server environments, for example, require use of multiple Gigabit Ethernet NICs and Fibre Channel HBAs. This increases I/O cost, cabling and management complexity.

In the fast-growing blade or clustered server environments, the management problem is further exacerbated because I/O is virtualized on a per physical server basis causing a new and undesired level of dependency between IT managers that manage the compute server, SAN and LAN domains. For example, scaling compute power by adding a blade or a clustered server causes dependencies in the SAN and LAN infrastructures.

InfiniBand I/O virtualization solves the above problems by providing unified I/O on the compute server farm, providing significantly higher LAN and SAN performance from virtual machines. It allows for effective segregation of the compute, LAN and SAN domains to enable independent scaling of resource.  The result is a more change ready virtual infrastructure.

Finally, in VMware ESX environments, the virtual machines, applications and Virtual Center based infrastructure management operate on familiar NIC and HBA interfaces, making it easy for the IT manager to avail of the above value propositions with minimal disruptions and learning.

InfiniBand powered enterprise messaging services accelerates SOA-based services
An important criterion for a firm’s competitive advantage is service delivery and associated business process management, where business goals drive IT infrastructure design and growth (not technology). Real time flow of data across servers and systems is a necessity. So is the ability to cost effectively integrate disparate systems and enable higher application performance without requiring them to change.

Enterprise Message Bus or Services software that is Java and .NET complaint form the backbone for delivering service oriented architecture (SOA) that meets the above needs. When such Enterprise Message Bus or Services are powered by InfiniBand, the entire realm of data center applications that rely on the backbone for accomplishing their tasks are accelerated automatically. This enables IT infrastructures to deliver significantly higher service levels while maintaining agility.

  • Example: The TIBCO Enterprise Message Bus and Rendezvous solutions have been proven to achieve four times more throughput using Cisco’s high-bandwidth (20Gb/s) and lowest latency InfiniBand-based networking products (see press release).

InfiniBand helps weather the storm of data growth and lower latency tolerance in capital markets
IT departments in financial capital markets are facing huge growth in market data and decreasing tolerance for trade execution latency causing them to intensely focus on infrastructure performance to maintain competitiveness. Failure to leverage efficient and cost-effective hardware are causing data center costs to mushroom. InfiniBand solutions from OEMs like Cisco and Voltaire, in collaboration with market data application providers like Wombat and Reuters, are solving these challenges today for many fortune 500 companies.

  • Example: The Cisco-Wombat solution significantly enhances the speed and predictability of market data delivery by eliminating almost 2/3rd of mean latency and reducing standard deviation of mean latency by 1/3rd (see press release - View STAC Test Report).
  • Example: Tangosol/Oracle data caching-based applications and the benefits of using InfiniBand (View Presentation).
