September hosted the China International Optoelectronic Exposition (CIOE) in Shenzhen, China and had over 60,000 attendees interested in optical technologies, networking and data center systems.
Mellanox had a booth with a live demonstration rack in the configuration shown above showcasing 25G SR transceivers and 25G AOCs both of which are very popular in APAC for linking compute servers and storage subsystems to Top-of-Rack switches. In many cases, 25G optical technologies are the preferred interconnect versus using copper DAC point-to-point and break out cables. Advantages are increased airflow from thinner cables, easier maintenance, and for reaches as far as 100m which enables placing systems components virtually anywhere inside most data centers.
The rapid adoption of 25G & 100G in APAC shows that APAC data center operators are modernizing their data centers at a very fast clip in preparing for the “data tsunami” created by social media, on-line shopping, big data and web access.

“LinkX Rack & Roll” Demo Chassis – Blinking Lights–Always Draw a Crowd!
The newly designed “LinkX Rack” was a big hit and is extremely successful in telling our story of Mellanox as an industry leader in 25, 50 and 100G Ethernet interconnects for Data Centers. Displayed was our full line of 25G, 50G and 100G DAC cables and breakouts; 25G & 100G AOCs; and 25G SR & 100G SR4 multi-mode transceivers in static and live demos.
Also featured was our new 25G SR transceiver and 25G AOC which are becoming very popular for server uplinks, storage and network appliance applications. While most competitors had only static displays of cables and transceivers, Mellanox showed new 25G/100G-based cables and transceivers working in live demos running in several end-to-end configurations.

LinkX Product Line Static Display: DAC, AOCs, & Transceivers
Our LinkX static display showed the full line of copper DAC and AOCs cables as well as both multi-mode and single-mode transceivers and port adapters. What many do not know is that almost all of these cables and transceivers are designed and manufactured by Mellanox including the control ICs and Silicon Photonics chips.
Live Demos: End-to-End Switch, Adapter, and Interconnect Display
These events give Mellanox a chance to show not only cables and transceivers but various types of our Ethernet switches and network adapters such as:
100G SR4 –to- Quad 25G SR Breakout Demo
For short reach applications, on display was our very popular 100G SR4 QSFP28 850nm multi-mode transceiver with a breakout fiber configuration to Quad 25G SR SFP28 transceivers. This configuration is popular for low-cost optical implementations linking servers to Top-of-Rack switches and to storage and network appliances over distances less than 100m. This configuration is also available in 10G/40G rates as well.
100G SR4 –to- Quad 25G SR Breakout Configuration
25G SR Transceivers and AOC Demo
Also popular is the use of individual 25G interconnect using AOCs over short reaches in areas with open cabling access while the transceiver version with duplex LC connectors is used for structured cabling when optical connectors are needed. Again, these are also available in 10G line rates.
2017 Future products on Display & Interop Demos
On display was our first showing of newly announced and future products: 25G AOCs and SR SFP28 transceivers for multi-mode, single channel applications, our new 100G LR4 10Km transceivers, and our new Silicon Photonics-based WDM4 2Km transceivers that transports four channels of 25G each, multiplexed onto only a single fiber over 2Km.
For single-mode applications, we demonstrated Mellanox 1550nm, 100G PSM4 transceivers linked over 2 Km with Innolight 1310nm PSM4 transceivers and our PSM4 with breakouts to Ligent-Hisense 1310nm 25G SFP28 LR transceivers over single-mode fiber in a quad breakout configuration.

CIOE is both a technical as well as a marketing conference, with workshops, technical tracks, and post deadline papers. Mellanox had a booth with live demos as well as numerous speaker presentations at both conferences which will be posted on the new LinkX section on the main Mellanox website.
