Mellanox Makes Headlines at International Supercomputing 2007

During ISC'07, Mellanox made several announcements, including an update to InfiniBand's ranking in the Top500

Mellanox Powers World’s First PetaScale Computing Environment

Mellanox announced that the Company’s InfiniBand adapters and InfiniScale™ III InfiniBand switch silicon power the Sun Constellation System which includes an ultra-dense blade server platform, high-throughput, high-density storage, and 3456-port InfiniBand switch. This system is based on non-proprietary and open source technologies and is expected to be one of the most powerful computing platforms in the world providing up to 1.7 PetaFLOPS of performance.

InfiniBand Continues Explosive Growth on June 2007 TOP500 List

InfiniBand continues to be the fastest growing cluster interconnect according to the 29th edition of the TOP500 list of the world’s most powerful computers. 132 supercomputers (26% of the list) are connected with InfiniBand, 230% more than the 40 supercomputers on the June 2006 list, and 61% more than the 82 supercomputers reported on the November 2006 list.

Scali And Mellanox Announce The First Quad Core Benchmarks On TopCrunch

Based on the LS-Dyna neon_refined_revised TopCrunch benchmark, Scali and Mellanox were able to compare SMP implementations and MPI-based versions of the same application.  The Scali™ MPI Connect™ based-version, running in conjunction with Mellanox 20Gb/s InfiniBand interconnect, delivered superior performance than alternatives.  Additionally, on a jobs per day basis, the data showed that the distribution of the applications can significantly increase throughput.  By example, running two jobs across 16 nodes, with 4 cores per node dedicated to each job delivered 43% greater jobs per day than the same jobs run serially with all eight cores dedicated to a single job.  The benchmarks results were obtained on the “Helios” cluster (Mellanox Cluster Center).

Mellanox InfiniBand Adapters Achieve OpenFabrics and University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab LogoOpenFabrics UNH-IOL Certified

Mellanox announced that its InfiniHost III family of market-leading 10 and 20Gb/s InfiniBand adapters have passed all interoperability test requirements and have achieved the prestigious OpenFabrics and University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab (UNH-IOL) Logo.

20Gb/s InfiniBand Provides Faster, Complex Subsurfacing Models

Oil and gas companies invest millions of dollars in infrastructure in the field well before drilling even begins. To reduce the uncertainty in drilling and production scenarios, geologists and engineers invest in sophisticated and complex simulations, such as 3D models representing the fluid and rock properties of the subsurface, and 4D modeling technology that adds a time element.

By taking numerous surveys and overlaying them with time-dependent information, well logs and production histories, geophysical scientists are processing as much as 100 terabytes of data at one time. This data is moved through a processing workflow that includes seismic analysis, modeling and visualization.

Compute Power is Critical to Efficiency and Success
High-levels of detail for the various simulations are required for the accuracy of oil and gas production rate estimates, such as realistic simulations of the geology and the flow of fluid through the rock. In a global competitive market, such as oil and gas, where the ability to locate extractable wells is decreasing, creating complicated subsurface models increases the odds of success. Performing simulated analysis on large reservoir models requires HPC clusters compute power and high-speed storage systems.

Efficient HPC clusters require high-bandwidth, low-latency, low CPU overhead, network flexibility scalability in order to maintain a balanced system and to provide the needed compute power for the oil and gas simulations. Low-performance interconnect solutions, or lack of interconnect hardware capabilities will result in degraded system performance and lack of capability to maintain the high load of reservoir simulations.

World-Class Performance
Mellanox’s 20Gb/s InfiniBand is designed for multi-core cluster environments and can efficiently handle multiple data streams simultaneously and at the same time guarantee fast and reliable data transfer for each of the streams. With latency as low as 1usec, Mellanox InfiniBand enables scalable fast communication among the processing units. Furthermore, InfiniBand based storage solutions enable fast and high-bandwidth storage access for the terabytes of the needed data.
