Mellanox InfiniScale™ IV Switch Architecture Provides Massively Scaleable 40Gb/s Server and Storage Connectivity

At SC07 Mellanox announced InfiniScale IV silicon switch architecture which further extends InfiniBand’s leadership in bandwidth, latency, scalability and optimized data traffic management. InfiniScale IV builds on the success of previous InfiniScale switch products that have been deployed in data centers cont aining approximately 2 million 10, 20, 30 and 60Gb/s InfiniBand silicon ports. New switch systems based on the InfiniScale IV architecture supporting up to 40Gb/s per port and 120Gb/s for inter-switch links are expected to be available in the latter part of 2008 from several leading server and infrastructure system OEMs.

“Products built utilizing the InfiniScale IV architecture will enable computing systems tackling complex and challenging workloads to scale to higher performance levels,” said Jie Wu, Research Manager for IDC's Technical Computing Systems program. “This is becoming increasingly important in a number of markets including technical computing and certain enterprise arenas, where applications are more sensitive to I/O bandwidth and latency."

Mellanox Adds Dual-Port 10GBase-T to its Industry-Leading 10 Gigabit Ethernet NIC Family

At SC07 Mellanox announced the availability of a dual-port, low-profile PCI Express adapter card supporting 10GigE connectivity to familiar and industry-standard Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cabling supporting the 10GBase-T standard. Also available with PCI Express x8 Gen2 in addition to a single port version, these adapters integrate the ConnectX EN 10 Gigabit Ethernet adapter controller and the Teranetics TeraPHY TN1010 transceiver supporting the IEEE 802.3an standard..

“We are pleased to work with Mellanox on the 10GBase-T adapters as Mellanox is proven to take high-performance interconnect technology to volume production and has a strong OEM presence,” said Matt Rhodes, CEO of Teranetics. “Their single-chip ConnectX controller coupled with our low power PHY enables a compelling dual-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet adapter solution for virtualization and I/O consolidation data center applications.”

Mellanox InfiniBand Accelerates Three of the Top Five Supercomputers in the World According to the TOP500 List

At SC07 Mellanoxannounced InfiniBand continues to be the fastest growing cluster interconnect according to the 30th edition of the TOP500 list of the world’s most powerful computers. 125 supercomputers (25% of the list) are connected with InfiniBand, 52% more than the 82 supercomputers reported on the November 2006 list. The total number of InfiniBand connected CPU cores on the list has grown from 137K in 2006 to 340K in 2007 (148% yearly growth) which highlights the increasing demand for InfiniBand to maximize computing resources and performance.

“InfiniBand continues to be the only growing high-speed interconnect, and a natural choice for high performance clusters, with 52% growth since November 2006, due to its world leading performance, efficiency and scalability characteristics that are demanded by multi-core servers and storage systems,” said Eyal Waldman, president, chairman and CEO of Mellanox Technologies. “Mellanox’s revenue growth during 2007 demonstrates continued strong demand in HPC for our InfiniBand interconnect products as well as our growth in enterprise data centers and embedded markets. With the availability of our 40Gb/s InfiniBand solutions expected in the latter part of 2008, Mellanox-based solutions are expected to continue to deliver the ever-increasing I/O performance needs of world leading research and educational centers and commercial data centers.”

Mellanox Announces InfiniBand Enablement for VMware Environments

Mellanox announced that later this year VMware is expected to provide enablement for Mellanox InfiniBand-based adapters in the newest release of VMware Infrastructure, which includes VMware ESX Server 3.5 and VMware VirtualCenter 2.5. The InfiniBand LAN networking and block storage drivers are based on the OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED) version 1.2.5 and were developed by Mellanox, VMware and other participants of the VMware Community Source program. Mellanox’s industry leading InfiniBand adapters seamlessly replace multiple fiber channel and Gigabit Ethernet adapters typically deployed in virtualized environments, which reduces data center power, cooling, capital expenditure and cost of ownership

“As one of the first members to join and actively collaborate in the VMware Community Source program, Mellanox was a key player in enabling InfiniBand I/O technologies for VMware Infrastructure,” said Brian Byun, vice president of global partners and solutions at VMware. “The enablement of InfiniBand-based adapters in VMware Infrastructure enables the entire InfiniBand ecosystem to leverage the market-leading VMware platform.”
